National Library By BIG

Invited as one of five pre-selected architects, BIG was awarded the first prize in an open international design competition to design the national library of Kazakhstan.

The winning proposal was chosen as being both modern and rational and anchored in a classical vocabulary of traditional libraries. The circular organisation of the archive at its inner core combines the clarity of a linear organisation with the convenience of an infinite loop.

Bjarke Ingels (founding partner of BIG): 'The design of the National Library combines four universal archetypes across space and time into a new national symbol: the circle, the rotunda, the arch and the yurt are merged into the form of a Möbius strip - to create a new national monument appearing local and universal, contemporary and timeless, unique and archetypal at the same time.'

Underground Louis Vuitton

The Design Team at Louis Vuitton created an underground store in the basement of Tokyo's Seibu Ikebukuro department store, which kind of looks like a construction site.

Stepping into the Louis Vuitton shop in the basement of Tokyo’s Seibu Ikebukuro department store, shoppers cannot be blamed for thinking they’ve stumbled onto a construction site. Created by the Paris-based Louis Vuitton Design Team, Louis Vuitton Underground is intended as a temporary retail space. The permanent store is not due to open until the autumn. Scattered throughout the 383-m2 interior is a clutter of scaffolding, wooden crates, safety barriers, electricity-supply codes and helmets. A custom-made forklift truck serves as a display for Louis Vuitton bags, and blueprints for the as-yet-unrealized store cover one wall of a space orchestrated to convey an atmosphere of heightened anticipation. Even the hand-painted linoleum floor looks convincingly like construction-site concrete. Customers do not require ear protection, however, as the decibel level here is no higher than that of an ordinary shop-in-shop.

Westside Shopping and Leisure Centre by Studio Daniel Libeskind

Studio Daniel Libeskind projected a new center for leisure and shopping in Bern-Brünne, Switzerland.

With its 55 shops, 10 restaurants and bars, hotel, multiplex cinema, fun bath with wellness center and housing, this mixed-use program radically reinvents the concept of shopping, entertainment and living. The concept of Westside is to create a public space with day and night facilities, a self-enclosed district offering endless amenities and services, almost like a city within a city.

The building design integrates the landscape and the different directions of the site while providing a unique look to the external areas. Extensive window cuts in varying designs open up the facades. The views allow you to see the highway, gateway to the living areas, the railway tracks and the widespread landscape to the south.

During the day the partly tanned window cuts contrast with the light wood facade. At night they are illuminated so that the part of the structure disappear in the darkness, so that from the outside the cuts are recognized as lines.

The steel concrete construction is designed like a trapezoidal crystal where the structure creates openings, galleries and arcades, complete with shops and catering facilities. The interior is almost entirely plastered white. The grid structure of the crystal is covered with zinc plates at the points where it cuts the facade and the roof.
