Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA) has won an international competition to develop the central plaza for the city of Masdar in the United Arab Emirates. LAVA considers Masdar ‘The Oasis of the Future: a living, breathing, active, adaptive environ; stimulated by the social interaction of the people, and spotlighting the use and benefits of sustainable technology.’ Adding to Masdar’s rigorous sustainability regulations, LAVA has implemented a city centre that includes a plaza, a five star hotel, long stay hotel, a convention centre, and entertainment complex and retail facilities. The design element that truly made LAVA’s entry stand out from the rest was their unique idea for shade structures. Essentially giant umbrellas the design is based on the principles of sunflowers. During the day, they will store heat and then they will close at night releasing the heat in the plaza.
