G hotel in Penang By K2LD Architects

International practice K2LD Architects create an award-winning hotel retreat off the coast of Malaysia.

International architecture company K2LD have struck success with their first hotel project – the G Hotel development in Malaysia. The hotel is situated just off the coast of the Malaysian mainland on Penang Island. It combines elements of a boutique hotel and an island retreat - the end result being a hotel that is luxurious, yet also relaxed and refreshing.

As the first hotel commission for the company it was a welcome bonus when it was awarded the Malaysia Property Award 2008. The award is from French-based design network FIABCI, and recognises excellence in real estate developments.

“G Hotel winning this award represents an affirmation of our firm’s design philosophy and team collaboration,” K2LD Director Ko Shiou Hee says.
The project took K2LD over two years – overseeing everything from the original plans, down to the custom furnishings and finishing touches.

“This was a painstaking debut, but seeing what the hotel is right now is rewarding enough. Looking back, it was worth the many design risks we took,” Hee says.
The company hopes that the development will cast a new light on Penang Island, bringing it out from the shadow of mainland Malaysia.
